AHAM has submitted comments to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) regarding their draft document, B483.1, Water treatment systems. B483.1 is being developed at the request of Canadian regulators to fill in perceived gaps left by current NSF standards. The draft standard would require the certification of all parts of the water treatment system, not just the filter used in refrigerator-freezer ice makers and water dispensing systems. AHAM's comments, developed in conjunction with the AHAM Refrigerator-Freezer Specialists, ask for refrigerator-freezers to be exempt from the scope of the document since the critical component of the system, the water filter, is already subjected to NSF requirements and members are not aware of any history of health related issues. In addition, other materials must comply with FDA requirements. . If this request is not accepted by CSA, AHAM has commented on specific issues that either need clarification or seem to have no relevance in the draft document. If you would like a copy of the comments, please contact Jennifer Moyer.
