International Issues

The home appliance industry is truly global.  Through export and import trade and world-wide manufacturing operations, the industry depends upon a level playing field in the international marketplace.  AHAM is involved with a variety international regulations and legislation involving environmental issues, standards, product/substance bans and product recycling. Our current focus includes the following.

Ontario, Canada Extended Producer Responsibility Law
The province of Ontario is considering regulations that would require manufacturers to take back used appliance products at the end-of-life.

European Union Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive
Information on the European Union’s WEEE directive which governs manufacturer responsibility for product take back at the end of life. 

Restriction of Hazardous Substances
Several countries and international governing bodies including the EU and China are considering RoHS regulations which restrict the use of certain “hazardous” substances in products

European Union’s Hydro-fluorocarbon (HFC) Regulations
Information on the EU’s proposals to restrict the use of HFCs in refrigeration and air conditioning products.

International Trade Issues

Information on international trade issues and economic policies that affect appliance products.
