Introduction
For more than 25 years, AHAM has been developing voluntary technical standards that are in the best interest of consumers, the industry and all other interested parties. AHAM standards relate primarily to the measurement of specific product performance characteristics for major and portable appliances. Standards development for floor care appliances occurs mainly within the ASTM International Committee F11 on Vacuum Cleaners.
AHAM Standards are developed in accordance with AHAM's "Policy and Procedures Governing Technical Standards".
AHAM welcomes comments and suggestions regarding any AHAM standard. Any standard may be reviewed and improved as needed.
With regard to appliance safety, AHAM recommends that all appliance products – major, portable and floor care -- manufactured or marketed in the United States be submitted to an appropriate independent testing laboratory for inspection and listing in conformance with the appropriate national safety standard.

ANSI Accreditation
AHAM maintains its status and an ANSI accredited Standards Developer Organization and submits many of its standards to the ANSI for approval as American National Standards. Each standard that gains ANSI recognition bears the ANSI/AHAM designation in the title of the standard. ANSI approval signifies that the standards have had the appropriate peer review and that the principles of consensus, due process and openness were followed during the development process. AHAM’s procedures for developing consensus for the approval, reaffirmation, revision and withdrawal of its American National Standards are documented in the AHAM Procedures for Approval of AHAM standards as American National Standards.

Formal Interpretations to AHAM Standards
Following the publication of an AHAM Technical Standard, any interested person may file a written request for a formal interpretation of the standard. Such a request should be submitted to the AHAM President and should contain the following information:
- The name and contact information of the requestor
- The correct standard reference, including applicable clauses
- The specific interpretation request
- The reason for the request
- The requestor’s recommended actions and reasons therefore
The process that is used to develop a formal interpretation is described in detail in AHAM’s Policy and Procedures for Governing Technical Standards, Section 10. Formal interpretations responses are normally issued within 45 to 60 business days from receipt of the inquiry.
Formal AHAM interpretations are available to the public. To view the interpretations that have been issued for current AHAM standards, see the table below.
