Smart Grid

The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 provides federal government assistance in establishing standards for an updated, smarter, and more efficient grid system, commonly being called the “Smart Grid.”

The Department of Energy envisions the Smart Grid as:

“an automated, widely distributed energy delivery network characterized by a two-way flow of electricity and information and will be capable of monitoring everything from power plants to customer preferences to individual appliances.  It incorporates into the grid the benefits of distributed computing and communications to deliver real-time information and enable the near-instantaneous balance of supply and demand at the device level.”

In January 2009, AHAM held a webinar titled The Future for Appliances in the Smart Grid, with presenters Don Hammerstrom and Robert Pratt from the Northwest Pacific National Laboratory.
