CANENA

The Council for Harmonization of Electrotechnical Standards of the Nations of the Americas (CANENA)

CANENA is a not-for-profit organization that supports international electro-technical standardization, primarily focused on harmonization efforts for North America.  The purpose of CANENA is to facilitate and promote the development of harmonized electro-technical codes and standards, and uniform conformity assessment methods utilized in North America. However, CANENA is not a standards developer and does not hold copyrights or intellectual property rights on the resulting documents.

The national members of CANENA represent the countries of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) such as Canada, Mexico, United States, etc.  General members are composed of dues-paying representatives from entities in each of those countries of the FTAA, such as trade associations, individual companies, or government agencies.  Principle members of CANENA represent the 3 primary safety standards development organizations for Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, which are ANCE, UL, and CSA respectively.

AHAM’s role in CANENA is to help develop U.S. industry positions on various standards and technical committees related to home appliances.  AHAM serves as the Secretariat for the current effort underway to harmonize the North American safety requirements for household refrigerators and freezers.  AHAM is also participating in the current effort to harmonize the Part 1 safety requirements for all household appliances.
