ISO

International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

ISO is an international standards developer, comprised of a network of national standards institutes from over 150 countries, on the basis of one member per country.  The Central Secretariat, which coordinates the system is located in Geneva, Switzerland.  ISO is a non-governmental organization; its members are not delegations of national governments, although many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government. However, other members have their roots in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations, which is the case in the U.S. where the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) serves as the U.S. member.

AHAM’s involvement with ISO is to help develop the U.S. position on ISO performance standards related to room air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and refrigerator-freezers.  These standards are promulgated by Technical Committee 86, which covers performance standards for all types of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
