Underwriters Laboratories (UL)

UL is an independent, not-for-profit entity that is both a standards development organization as well as a product-safety testing and certification organization. UL’s safety standards are developed through Standards Technical Panels (STPs), which consist of representatives from a balanced group of interested parties. 

AHAM staff serves on many of the STPs related to home appliances (link to matrix below).  Staff’s role is to help develop industry consensus positions on safety matters related to home appliances.  AHAM’s policy is that staff does not vote on any STP issues unless there is unanimity among its membership, evidenced by no dissenting comments on distributed ballots.
