The Internet of Things (IoT) is already transforming the consumer goods marketplace. While the benefits to manufacturers and consumers are still revealing themselves, concerns over cybersecurity, privacy, and safety are receiving increasing attention from lawmakers and the federal, state, and provincial level. For example, IoT technologies create the possibility of unattended cooking functions for connected products, but then raise safety issues with the device itself and privacy concerns around something as personal as a consumer’s diet. This session will address AHAM’s current and future strategy on cyber issues, taking into account possible technological developments and on-going collaboration with other industry sectors.

With little activity happening at the federal level on some environmental issues, some states are stepping into what they perceive to be a void. Furthermore, environmental issues are very much at the forefront of government activities in Canada and the European Union. The decision by Asian nations to stop accepting recyclables from Europe and North America has exacerbated the situation. The result is a challenging environment for AHAM’s advocacy team, which is developing ideas for a possibly more proactive strategy for how the appliance industry addresses a number of environmental policy questions. This session will address and decide on this possible proactive strategy on the following topics: Plastics – packaging, single use, EPR, microfibers;  Sustainability/Circular Economy: Global developments, AHAM standards, possibility of an appliance industry sustainability report; Chemicals, prop 65, organohalogens

The Councils will have a follow-up discussion on the DOE appliance standards program after the joint engineering and government relations council discussions on Day 1 and finalize strategy.
