Statement from AHAM President & CEO Kelly Mariotti on the Introduction of EPCA Modernization Legislation in the U.S. Senate

Washington, D.C. (August 6, 2026) — The introduction of the Energy Efficiency Reform Act of 2026 in the U.S. Senate is an important step toward comprehensive modernization of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act[JC1.1][DC1.2]. AHAM thanks Sen. Mike Lee of Utah for taking this action to improve the law that governs how federal energy conservation standards are developed and updated. 

Home appliance manufacturers have delivered continuous improvements in energy and water efficiency for nearly 40 years. EPCA’s current practice of updating standards based on the passage of time, rather than on opportunities for real energy efficiency gains, is for many products generating diminished returns that result in negligible energy and cost savings for consumers. Modernizing EPCA is essential to preserve an effective Federal Appliance Standards Program that prioritizes meaningful energy bill savings for consumers and protects appliance performance, features, affordability and consumer choice. 

AHAM has been a leading advocate for EPCA modernization and looks forward to continuing to work with Sen. Lee and other senators as they consider this legislation.
