HomeWork features AHAM members’ and partners’ insights into careers, success, life outside of work, and AHAM membership. This month, we spoke with Dustin Steward, Director and Global Industry Leader, UL Solutions, an AHAM Partner Sponsor.
Tell us about your path to your current position.
I started my working life in the U.S. Marines. As an enlisted Marine and then later as an officer, I learned the value of discipline, adaptability and leading with integrity – earning respect through service and never asking more of others than I would give myself. In civilian life, I gained hands-on experience in finance, business development and marketing, eventually applying those skills as the owner of an appliance retail store and a real estate management company. For the past seven years, I’ve been with UL Solutions, where I lead the global business strategy for appliances, HVAC and components – combining strategic insights with practical business logic to help shape the future of our company and working for a safer, smarter, and more sustainable world.
What is the best professional advice you have ever received?
Don’t wait to be ready – say yes and then adapt as you go. Doing things outside of my comfort zone has led to many new growth opportunities, and this advice taught me that confidence often comes after action, not before. A corollary to this advice is that courage is not the absence of fear – it’s doing “the thing” in spite of it.
What does UL Solutions gain from its work with AHAM?
Our partnership with AHAM allows for a number of strategic and operational benefits.
• We work closely together to develop and refine safety and performance standards.
• We share information on industry trends and regulatory developments.
• Our collaboration helps to enhance credibility and trust with regulators, manufacturers and consumers.
• Working with AHAM members gives us a thrilling window into the future of home appliance innovations.
How do you recharge when you are not working?
When I’m not working, I recharge by staying active and spending quality time with people I care about. I love playing golf and pickleball, which are a great mix of fun, focus and social connection. I also enjoy cycling and swimming, which helps me clear my mind and stay energized and balanced.
What is a common misconception people have about your job or your field?
I think a common misconception about the testing, inspection and certification industry is that it is boring or overly technical, but in reality, it’s incredibly dynamic and impactful. Our work is critical in ensuring safety, quality, and compliance across the entire spectrum of products around us. Every project brings new challenges, technologies and global standards to navigate, which keeps things interesting. It’s also a space where you can see the real-world impact of your work, helping companies innovate responsibly and giving consumers confidence in the products they, we and our loved ones rely on every day.
What professional and personal achievements are you most proud of, and why?
One of my professional achievements I’m most proud of is leading a high-performing international team. It’s incredibly rewarding to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and time zones to create an environment where collaboration, innovation, and trust thrive. Seeing the team consistently exceed expectations and support one another’s growth and success has been both fulfilling and inspiring.
On a personal level, I’m most proud of having a happy and healthy family. Balancing a demanding career while ensuring that my family feels supported, connected, and cared for is something I deeply value. Their well-being and happiness ground me and give even greater meaning to my professional accomplishments.
