HomeWork features AHAM members' insights on careers, success, life outside of work, and AHAM membership. This month, we spoke with Ed Vlacich, Chief Executive Officer, Lasko Products
.
How did you come to work in the appliance industry?
I've never really targeted a specific industry in my career. I've worked in consumer products, healthcare, and consulting across dozens of categories. I look for opportunities with strong growth potential, the chance to make a difference and a culture that fits with my work philosophy. The Lasko role fits this perfectly. I also felt that Lasko's portfolio falls somewhere between appliances and consumer products. While our products are considered small appliances, the sheer number of units we manufacture each year and the seasonal spikes in retail sales feels more like fast-moving consumer goods to me.
How do you stay up to date on industry trends?
I read a lot. I have Google searches for an array of keywords which keep me current on the industry, competitors, retailers, and climate (since we provide much-needed relief during periods of extreme weather). I also read industry periodicals and network with fellow AHAM members at events. Finally, our retail partners have a wealth of knowledge about their shoppers and what consumers are looking for in our product categories.
What are your secrets to work-life balance?
I've always believed that the secret is to do what’s right for you. No one else knows what "balance" means for you plus balance looks different during phases of your career. For me, it's about being healthy and exercising, spending engaging time with family, keeping friendships thriving, and enjoying your work.
How has a diverse and inclusive workforce added to your company's culture?
I think a diverse and inclusive workforce helps everyone succeed. Positive momentum breeds more positive momentum. When employees feel like they are part of the team and their opinions are valued, they become more engaged. And employee engagement is contagious!
Outside of the appliance industry, what would be your dream job?
My dream job would be a chef. I love to cook, and l appreciate great food. I thrive on the stress of a deadline, so I believe I'd be pretty good at managing a kitchen.
What's your favorite benefit of being an AHAM member?
Networking with other colleagues in the industry. At the last AHAM Annual Member Meeting, it was great to hear stories from others who are experiencing some of the challenges we have experienced.
