HomeWork features AHAM members' insights on careers, success, life outside of work, and AHAM membership. This month, we spoke with Winston Lindsay, CEO, Lindsay Manufacturing.
How did you come to work in the appliance industry?
As a young boy, I found myself immersed in the world of central vacuums, working alongside my father on central vacuum installations. I was the agile one, crawling through attics and accessing tight spaces to help him drill holes – a unique apprenticeship that sparked my fascination with the floor care industry. After completing my education, I returned to take the reins of the production plant. Over the years, I evolved from a plant manager to the leader of the company, driven by a deep-seated passion for innovation.
What are your secrets to work-life balance?
Achieving a fulfilling work-life balance is about pursuing your passions. For me, it's a trifecta of family, work, and personal interests like golf and yoga. But beyond that, I'm deeply passionate about making a difference. In our factory, we've established an enclave where individuals with disabilities contribute to our company by performing simple tasks. Witnessing them earn a living and find purpose is a remarkable source of motivation. It's about giving back and making our world a better place.
How do you stay up to date on industry trends?
Staying at the forefront of the appliance industry requires constant learning and networking. My engagement with industry professionals through organizations like AHAM and ASTM ensures that I stay abreast of the latest regulations and standards in the industry. My focus is on elevating the entire floor care industry. Collaboration with suppliers and vacuum installers drives innovation in new products and technology, and my philosophy centers on fostering cooperative growth, especially with our suppliers.
Outside of the appliance industry, what would be your dream job?
Beyond appliances, my dream job would be as a stockbroker. The thrill of buying and selling stocks and delving into the intricacies of investments captivates me.
What appliance can you not live without?
Without a doubt, my indispensable appliance is the VacuMaid central vacuum with the Hide-A-Hose retractable hose. Imagine a hose conveniently tucked inside the wall, ready to be effortlessly pulled out whenever cleaning needs arise. It's a testament to the seamless blend of innovation and convenience, making life just a bit easier.
