HomeWork features AHAM members' insights on careers, success, life outside of work, and AHAM membership. This month, we spoke with TJ Stoffer, Senior Vice President of Sales, North America, Electrolux Group, and a member of AHAM's Board of Directors.
How did you come to work in the appliance industry?
I grew up in Iowa and was recruited out of college to join Maytag prior to the company being acquired by Whirlpool. It was a great opportunity to learn about the business and the industry early in my career.
What are your secrets to work-life balance?
Over the past few years, I've really tried to focus on being present where I need to be at a given time. When I reflect on memories in my life, both personal and professional, it isn't always the big events but sometimes the small moments we remember most. Based on this perspective I remind myself to enjoy moments and make memories everyday in both business and personal life.
What is the best career advice you have ever received?
Take a step back and take a step up when looking at your business, teams or leadership. Many times leaders, myself included, can get overwhelmed by specific challenges. I remind myself and my teams to take a step back and a step up and look at the business from a high level. I find this brings clarity to solving problems with the team and providing direction on what to work on.
How has a diverse and inclusive workforce added to your company’s culture?
Focus on this area has been very rewarding for our culture and business evolution. Diversity in all aspects of people, thinking, and background adds to the engagement of people and teams and helps our business relate to all different types of consumers. I'm proud of the work that the teams at Electrolux have accomplished, but it's a journey and there is always more work to do.
What do you gain from your involvement with AHAM?
Being part of AHAM has given me a greater perspective on how important our industry is to the U.S. workforce and consumers. With (AHAM President and CEO) Kelly Mariotti's and the Board's leadership, the team is thinking more strategically about how AHAM can play a larger role in creating a healthier and more sustainable industry for manufacturers and consumers. It's rewarding for me to learn from the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of all members and the board. I'm very grateful for the opportunity.
What is your best advice for somebody who wants to succeed in the home appliance industry?
Listen, learn and network to build relationships. I firmly believe this industry and business is driven by strong relationships with customers, suppliers, internal teams and, most importantly, the consumer.
Outside of the appliance industry, what would be your dream job?
It's hard to say a specific job, I would say a leadership role within a professional sports team or a job that allows people to create the experiences of a lifetime with family or friends.
