HomeWork features AHAM members’ insights on careers, success, life outside of work, and AHAM membership. This month, we spoke with Evan Hoffman, Director of State and Local Government Relations, Philips.
What are your secrets to a productive day?
I get an early start that begins with a workout. When I get to my desk, I feel refreshed and ready to go!
Predict an innovation that will revolutionize the next generation.
At Philips, we witness how technology is transforming healthcare. For example, remote patient monitoring technology gives doctors better line-of-sight into their patients when they are home. With this technology, a patient wears a device – a patch, ring, or bracelet – that continuously tracks vitals, sharing this data with the patient’s care team. Why is this transformative? Imagine if doctors can see a patient deteriorate before the patient feels symptoms. This will allow doctors to intervene before the medical emergency happens, saving lives and reducing healthcare costs.
What does your company gain from its involvement in AHAM, and how do you encourage your colleagues to stay involved?
Several Philips technologies are used in the home to improve people’s well-being, like Sonicare Electric Toothbrushes and Norelco Electric Razors. In fact, many Philips Norelco trimmers were even helpful during the pandemic as many doctors used our trimmers to ensure their masks fit properly. Many issues tackled by AHAM are critical to Philips, like preventing the sale of counterfeit goods and protecting intellectual property by defeating state-level “right to repair” bills. AHAM also provides a platform to share how home appliances improve people’s lives by increasing convenience and enhancing the quality of life.
How has a diverse and inclusive workforce helped your company to meet its objectives?
I’m extremely proud to work at Philips, which strives to create an inclusive and diverse workspace. Working at an inclusive company allows us to be our best selves and embrace differing points of view, which closely links to our ability to co-create, innovate, and improve performance. I am thrilled to see Philips achieve several accolades in this area: the company received a score of 100% on the Human Rights Campaign 2021 Corporate Equality Index, naming Philips one of the Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality in North America. We were also named on Forbes' list of the best employers for diversity.
What is the best career advice you have ever received?
Work to find some level of inspiration to keep you motivated. For me at Philips, it is linking our company’s mission to improve the lives of 2.5 billion people a year by 2030.
What advice do you have for somebody who wants to succeed in the home appliance industry?
Work to feel inspired by how your company’s technologies improve people’s lives. Build and share this narrative.
What would be your dream job outside of your current industry?
Well, like any young boy, I dreamed of being a professional athlete, but my 5-foot-10-inch lanky frame and lack of foot speed wouldn’t cut it for basketball. Joking aside, I am blessed to be inspired by my current job each day so have no regrets otherwise.
