HomeWork features AHAM members’ and partners’ insights into careers, success, life outside of work, and AHAM membership. This month, we spoke with Brad Affeldt, Global Director and Business Line Leader, Intertek ETL
How did you get started in the home appliance industry?
I began my Intertek career 15 years ago and began working in our energy and power systems services group. About 6 years ago I was asked to take over our global strategy in the Appliances space.
What is the best career advice you have ever received?
When I need to speak with a trusted person who is also extremely accomplished in business, it is my aunt. She retired after overseeing one of the largest corporate spin-offs in recent history in the financial services sector. When I reach out to her it is because I need to re-ground myself in fundamentals of the business world – ethics, and what is best for our customers, shareholders, and the company. She reminds me to always remember to be the best problem solver in the company and to remember that there are shareholders who are trusting in me to create value for our customers and by extension, them.
What professional achievement are you most proud of, and why?
I was able to bring on to Intertek one of the foremost power and energy manufacturing clients in the world. Initially, the relationship with Intertek was effectively zero. Today, they are one of our largest global customers. Along with one of the best technical teams in the industry, I was able to greatly increase the penetration of the Intertek ETL brand in power and renewable energy overall.
What are your secrets to work-life balance?
This is a phrase that has been around for a long time. For me, it is priorities. Sometimes the balance is not a balance at all. Demands change with the times based on what your assignment is. But through it all, my job as a dad and husband is the most important. That does not mean that you put off your job for every little second with your family, but it means that you are very in touch with your priorities and are able to sense the trajectory of your family. Get your work done, but not at the expense of your family’s well-being. If this is not possible, I will find a new job.
What does your company gain from AHAM membership?
I am so glad to have this relationship with AHAM. In the case of a certification body partner, we have a unique opportunity to listen and learn from the industry in order to better achieve our mandate. This is to do all we can to help our customers successfully launch safe and high-quality products that their customers will want to buy again. AHAM’s role in this is also key, and it is a fantastic partnership. We gain incredible insight that helps me to ever-improve our global strategy in serving the industry with the highest quality service.
Outside of the appliance industry, what would be your dream job?
When I was in the banking industry, I was always interested in becoming an investment banker. I love to pick apart puzzles, find value, and assess business situations. However, I suspect this would not be conducive to my previous statement of family priorities, so it is probably for the better! Outside of this, physical activity and fitness have been important for me since my early teen years, and I would definitely enjoy being a personal trainer.
What appliance can you not live without?
I hate to say it, but I have to speak truth. Coffee maker!
